Behind the Scenes at NaughtiPidgins Nest

I'm just going assume that if you know me and you like bags, you will know Shian of NaughtiPidgins Nest. After all, my bag reviews have been around for only one year and Shian's Nest is now celebrating its 11th anniversary! Being one of our trusted sellers, she's somewhat of an icon in the world of preloved designer bags and admired (as well as envied!) by many of us.

I've been planning to do a bit of a profile for ages and the anniversary has given me the perfect opportunity to coax Shian into answering some questions. Not knowing when to shut up, we ended up with so much material you can look forward to a whole series on Shian and the Nest!

Hi Shian, firstly happy birthday to the Nest! Thanks for taking the time to give us an insight into what many of us bag-lovers would consider the ultimate Aladdin's cave! How did it all start? Why handbags?

“It started from the need to downsize my own collection when we moved from London to Lancashire in 2005. I started selling my own bags on eBay and both Buyers and Sellers seemed to like the way I took lots and lots of photos and described things very honestly. It wasn’t long before people were contacting me to ask if I could sell their bags for them and it really went from there. In May 2011 I decided eBay had served its time for the ‘Nest’ and set up my own website which has been incredible fun and I’m loving every minute of it.”

When or how did you fall in love with designer handbags?

“Though I dabbled with a few Bally’s in my late teens, my first ‘wow’ moment was the first time I walked into Chanel Rue Saint-Honoré. I left with my first Chanel 2.55 and the rest is history.”

How many bags do you have now and what's your favourite?

“My collection is rather sadly depleted from its peak, but it is true… I really don’t need two different bags a day, every day of the week, each month of the year, anymore! (At least that’s what I try to keep telling myself when my collection creeps up in size. An occupational hazard of the job, so I’m not too hard on myself.) I now tend to keep a core of classics that I rarely stray from, and a varied collection of Mulberry (mainly older styles as it seems to take me a while to ‘warm up’ to newer ones.) As long as they all still fit in my designated ‘personal-bag-space’ then I know I’m still in control! My current favourite is a rather battered Mulberry Euston in chocolate Darwin. I love an easy to wear boston bag.”

Where did the name Naughtipidgin's Nest come from?

"It was my eBay ID, and as word spread, it stayed with me. How it actually came about in the first instance is a bit of a mystery really… not the easiest name to say or spell, so, had I known I’d eventually have a business, I’d of chosen something a bit more relevant! I changed the website url and name to NPN Bags a couple of years ago now as felt it was just easier for people to remember (and type!)”

What do you love most about running the Nest?

"I do love the fact it’s just ‘me’. When I worked in teams I was never great at delegation and knowing that everything is down to me gives me great sense of pride and also responsibility. I’m not afraid to say I’m a bit of a control freak so when the buck stops with me, I know exactly where it is!

The business model has changed throughout the years though as when I started the company I was buying items for resale and though the financial outlay was sometimes a little scary, the mechanics of the business were more straightforward. No ‘third parties’, just a buyer and me so the decision making process for things like prices, promotions and discounts didn’t require any consultation. As such, I was able to turnover a much higher level of items, (a record week on ebay once saw over 120 sales!) which was great, up to the point where the UK VAT rules began to loom and I realised that if I didn’t want to have to charge people VAT, that I’d need to do it differently!

Now, how much would you love to be let loose in that store room?!

The launching of the website in May 2011 saw a new era and opportunity as the Nest began offering a Consignment Service, whereby instead of buying Sellers bags for resale, I simply sold them for them for a small commission. This had three great advantages. My financial risk was lessened, the Sellers financial return was greatly increased and my business turnover was limited to the profit of the sale, not the entire sale amount.

It’s a fantastic business model and though it is a lot of hard work… there are over 300 Sellers to look after at any one point…..it really is a labour of love. I can’t imagine doing anything else now."

Thanks Shian, I really enjoyed that! But just like that time when I did the interview with Aqila, I couldn't shut up - so you can look forward to more from Shian: some tips and tricks, a couple of funny anecdotes and more pictures!
Before I finish for tonight though hop over to the Nest's Birthday Event page for your chance to win £250 in Nest vouchers or a gorgeous Gucci Jackie!

How Can I Sleep...

A-ha - Cast in Steel Tour
Manchester Arena - 25/03/16

Ticket: £55 each. Block 103, Row K, Seats 2 & 3.

Who did I drag there?
Mr G. As it was Good Friday I had a bit of trouble of getting a babysitter and I thought I'd have to invite an unsuspecting friend but Master J was home from uni and kindly looked after little M. Should I add here that we gave him the choice of coming with me or babysit? He chose babysitting. I'll just leave this one here.

How did we get there?
As the gig was on Good Friday we ended up actually having to travel into Manchester (on a weekday I'd normally have just stayed in after work). We decided not to park at the Arena as getting out can be a matter of hours. Instead we parked near Shudehill, paid just £4 and only needed about 5 minutes to walk there through Victoria Station. Can only recommend this to avoid the post gig queues.

View
Block 103 is just one block away from the stage and I was pretty happy with how close we were and how well I could see them. Of course I still longingly looked at that front row right in front of the stage, where people got up and stood mere feet away. "One day" I thought. And then I realised this is probably the last tour. Queue the first bout of tears.

Setlist:

I’ve Been Losing You - One of my absolute favourite songs and contrary to what some reviewers said, I thought it was a great opener.
Cry Wolf - headbanging wolves on the displays. Need I say more?
Move to Memphis - Mr G said, in places the guitar reminded him of Carlos Alomar on David Bowie's Stay. I had no idea what he was on about and kept thinking, "when on earth did Bowie colab with Santana?!"
Stay on These Roads - Never one of my favourites, always found it a bit too soppy and sentimental and just not dark and punchy enough. Was great live though.
The Swing of Things - I think Morten's voice graveling "'Sleep', you wrote 'sleep, my dear'" and then rise up to "in a letter somewhere" is my favourite piece of any of their tracks. Total goosebumps when he bottoms out at 'dear'. And live it's even better.
Cast In Steel - Title track from the new album. The studio version is a bit of a grower (the whole album is), much more touching live, certainly paired with the images of a young Pal, Magne & Morten.
Crying in the Rain - Never really liked this one, always thought it really wasn't A-ha song, even before I ever heard of the Everly Brothers. Well, it obviously isn't but the duet with Annelie Drecker was a nice change.
Mother Nature Goes to Heaven - Totally underrated, why was this never released as a single?! Even better live!
We’re Looking for the Whales - Proper 80s beat. Thoroughly enjoyed bouncing around to this.

Morten leaves the stage

Velvet (Pal) - Beautiful and simple arrangement with Pal and Magne just standing next to each other, playing guitars and Pal singing. Annelie's voice works so well for the female singing parts.
Lifelines (Magne) - Magne introduced this by saying "Morten said I'm not a vocalist". Hm, I hadn't heard that interview. Felt like a bit of a (justified?) stab by Mags and reflected the tense feeling I got off the band at times.

Morten is back -

Foot of the Mountain - A bit of a crowd pleaser, again, I think a song that works so well live.
She’s Humming a Tune - What a change from FotM! Took me by surprise (as I hadn't checked any set lists before) and was taken in by the melancholic melody and lyrics.
Sycamore Leaves - I sound like a broken record, but this one, again, works even better live. The added grit increases that feeling of unease they sing about...
Hunting High and Low - Even the last person who might have still been on their seat, was up for this. Sing along yes. Tears as well.
Scoundrel Days - More singing for the crowd. Along with that feeling of running and a serious flashback to being 13 years old and sitting on my bedroom floor. Just wow.

Encores
The Sun Always Shines on TV - Whereas songs like Sycamore Leaves work so well live because you can make them more real and gravely, this one benefited from the sheer drama, lights and adrenaline in the venue. Bit of a bizarre choice of images for the display (violin playing mannequin kids?!) added to the almost other-worldly atmosphere and sense of theatre.

Under the Makeup - Back to beautiful and simple.
The Living Daylights - And we're back up top, along with the obligatory sing along, directed by Mags.

The guys disappear again. Could they really leave without having played *that* song?! No, of course not, it's still dark...

Take on Me - A great pop song but never my favourite, mainly because people always say "A-ha? Ah, yes, the 'Take on Me" boys!" They have done so many so much better songs. And this one is simply overplayed compared to everything else. Nonetheless, it was great: Morten hit those high notes. The crowd was jumping, dancing, singing, clapping and more.

How was it?
As I remembered from other gigs before, Mags did most of the talking and Morten was occupied by delivering the best vocal possible. You could see that he was getting frustrated at times, gesturing to his earpiece guy. As stated above, Mags mentioned something about Morten having said he (Mags) wasn't a vocalist before singing Lifelines. You could definitely sense that there was some tension. (Just a few days later, Morten gave *that* interview, where he said that he'd definitely do no more A-ha after this.) Funnily enough I realised that tension only properly a month later when I saw them in Germany. They just seemed to have so much more fun in Mannheim and Frankfurt.

Mr G (who isn't an A-ha fan *at all*) remarked on the fab light show was. Some of the themes chosen were a bit cheesy, e.g the headbanging wolves to Cry Wolf, but overall the quality of the pieces and the effect were fab. Simple enough not to be gimmicky, bold enough to build a mood.

I don't know how anybody can stay in their seat for a gig like that. I mean, seriously?! Lots of people sitting on their chairs, but I'd say probably about 30% were up and dancing for most of the gig - plus all of the floor section. Despite the tension, it goes without saying the songs themselves and the energy did their part to make me well up. But then again I do that at Kylie concerts.

Of course, for the encores the entire arena was on their feet. How could you not for Take On Me?!

Aftermath
I walked away elated, yet sad. Is it really nearly over?! Morten's demeanor as well as the interview that followed in April gave me the push to buy tickets for the Frankfurt date. So I knew I'd see them at least another two times.

Did you go? And if so what did you think? And will they surprise us again in another five years? Let's hope so!

My Bag Collection: Mulberry Alexa

It might look like I have lots and lots of bags but many of them come and go. If you know me and/or my blog you will be well aware that a bag is really only allowed to stay if it is practical and if I get good use out of it. Ok, exceptions apply, but I tend to think that it's pretty pointless to have a bag sat in your wardrobe. Get it out. Use it. And if it doesn't work for you: move it on.

This is the second post in my series of giving you a bit more info on the bags that are "keepers". After showing you what's so great about the Mulberry Mini Alexa, I am now going to tell you why the regular Alexa is one of my most used bags!

Model
Mulberry Alexa (Regular) in Black Soft Buffalo Leather

Size
33cm wide, 23cm high, 16.5cm deep

Features
Postman Lock and magnetic strap closure. Fully lined. Interior slip and interior zip pocket. Removable and adjustable strap.

Style
Heavily inspired by the traditional satchel shape (though deeper), the Alexa is probably most known for its slouchy shape and rock'n'roll style. This is my ultimate "just throw it on" bag, due to its size, long strap (you know how much I like to carry my bags cross body) and low maintenance leather. More casual than a typical workbag, I use it for work nevertheless and think it works absolutely fine - especially in black.

When do I use her
At the moment this is my daily work commute bag. (My laptop doesn't fit, so that goes into a separate, simple sleeve.) As I said above: this is my go-to bag and if I can't decide which one to take, I usually end up taking my Alexa.

Fits
Samorga insert for Alexa, Van der Spek Nomad (TN-sized Midori) with pen, Naked Cow FN-sized Midori with 4 inserts & pen, pencil case, Mulberry French Purse, travel card, access card, various charger cable, tissues, handcream, lip salve, inhalers, ibuprofen, various letters & paperwork, compact shopping bag, keys*,  work phone* & iPhone*
*yes, I forgot these in the pics

Recommended Care
Use Collonil Gel for cleaning and nourishing and finish off with Collonil Waterstop spray to protect.

For further info (including how to convert it to a rucksack!) have a look at the various reviews I've done on the Alexa

Spring, Where Art Though?

I'm getting a tad bored (and I'm sure you feel the same way) of talking about the weather every week in my bid to narrate my outfit choices. I've been expecting to move onto spring/summer outfits and been saying every week that, surely, this should be the last week of opaque tights and warm, layered knits. And every week so far I've been wrong. The fact that I managed to sneak in two warm weather outfits last week give hope but the week following that (i.e. this week) went ridiculously cold again. I mean, we had some snow yesterday. A few days from May. I give up.

Mulberry Being a Bit Chanel

Is it a purse, it is a bag?

Mulberry's Bayswater Clutch Wallet clearly took (ahem) inspiration from Chanel's famous Wallet On a Chain - or WOC as it is often called. A large purse with enough space for a phone a couple of essentials but also a zip pocket (for chain) and some credit card slips. Carry it underneath your arm, clutch-style or attach the chain and wear it on your shoulder or even cross-body - super versatile. And you know what I'm like when it gets to finding pieces that are practical and useable!

Still Not Spring Yet?!

I keep saying that winter is going, that it's spring now, that I'm going to ditch the winter clothes and get out my spring outfits - and then I keep reaching for the warmer and layered styles. Sigh. Let's see what happens next week...

Covet Monday - Something Danish

I know this is getting rather old: I post a pic or a link of a bag I have fallen in love with. I might then go on about it for a while. And then I find reasons for not buying it. Usually like it can't be carried properly, might show wear to easily or is too small.

But every now and then I come scarily close to purchasing - or actually follow through.

I recently came across the Danish bag designer Rodtnes and was instantly hooked by their timeless styles and lush looking leathers.

The Loretta bag seemed to tick all the boxes: good size, compartments - even a space for my laptop, handles that can be lengthened to go on your shoulder... the list went on. The only drawback: it only came in black and I found that a bit too severe.

Rodtnes Loretta

Imagine my delight when they announced the launch of a grey version - with 20% off until 23rd of April

So one of these will be winging its way to me!

Mulberry Mitzy - Which One Is That?!

Whilst the Mulberry Mitzy might not appeal to everybody looks-wise, there is no denying, that's it a really useful bag. With prices from new at £325 for the messenger, it's also really good value for money, especially if you use it every day.

But - how many Mulberry Mitzys are there?

Well, there is the Mitzy Hobo, which comes in two sizes, the Messenger, the East West Hobo and the Tote. (There is also the Sofia, which is very similar to the Mitzy, just a bit girlier. Oh, and then there is the pouch and the clutch but we won't include those here.)

It used to come in a variety of leathers, including different shades of purple (eggplant, rouge noir, blueberry), a leopard print in oak and purple but is now mainly available in oak and black - at least from new at the outlets.

I thought it would be useful to list the above mentioned models and as I didn't have photographs for all of them, the lovely Shian at Naughtipidgin's Nest let me use some of hers. By the way, the Nest is a fab place to research bag styles anyway as even sold items are still viewable - just use the search function!

Anyway, back to the Mitzy - here they all are!
